In the beginning of this chapter Odysseus had started for town. He was going to the house of Alcinous, the King of the country. Odysseus had asked a young girl who was actually Athene who had disguised herself. When Odysseus finally got to the palace he was filled with many emotions and stopped many times to regain himself. The palace itself was beautiful with high ceilings and walls with bronze enamel on them. On either sides of the doors were gold and silver dogs that guarded the palace. Inside the great hall were tall chairs were on either side of the wall . After Odysseus entered her went to Alcinous' wife Arete and asked to speak to her husband and went to sit by the warm fire. Alcinous listened closely and had his servants make more wine so Odysseus could drink some. Odysseus made a long speech and at the end everyone stood up and applauded for him. Arete was the first to question Odysseus asking where he was from, who he was and who had given him all the clothes. He told his story of how he was on the island of Ogygia and that he had gotten there by floating on a piece of his boat for nine days and that he was in the hands of Calyso who wanted to make him immortal. After eight years she sent him away on a well made raft and he floated along the sea for seventeen days and on the eighteenth day he saw mountains and had found there land. After hearing his story Alcinous wanted Odysseus to stay and marry his daughter and have him be his son-in-law. Odysseus decides to agree and Arete has a bed made for him to stay with them for a while.
